Marine Life Sanctuaries Society

Marine Life Sanctuaries Society

Our mandate is to create marine sanctuaries and protect marine life. Many areas of the British Columbia marine environment are threatened by pollution, over-harvesting, and habitat degradation, resulting in imbalanced ecosystems. Without help and protection, our marine environment has little or no chance for recovery.

Keep Rocking the Boat

June 20, 2026 by

Keep Rocking the Boat Campaign

With the vessel now operational, we are launching our Keep Rocking the Boat Campaign to help sustain this important new initiative.

Help Float the Boat for MLSS Science

A tremendous thank you to the generous support of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Shuparski Foundation, private donors, and the incredible dedication of boat builder and captain Mike Shannon of Old School Marine on Bowen Island.
Together, we have transformed a classic 28’ Tollycraft into a fully outfitted marine conservation and research vessel.
The vessel now features a rebuilt 330 hp Volvo Penta engine, custom scientific workspace, and a redesigned deck and interior to support marine research equipment and citizen science scuba diving operations.
This boat will directly support Marine Life Sanctuaries Society programs including:
·        Glass sponge reef mapping
·        Long-term temperature monitoring
·        Rockfish monitoring surveys
·        Lingcod egg mass monitoring
·        Citizen science and marine stewardship initiatives
